Practical Karate and Self Defense - McGowan Wellness space (MG215)

In this class students will learn the basics of Japanese Karate (punching, striking, kicking) and its practical application in common self-defense scenarios. In addition to the physical components of self-defense, we will discuss the elements of self-defense and how the law defines those elements. This will include discussing
the legal concepts of assault and battery. The overall goal of this class is to develop awareness (situational and physical), confidence, and risk prevention. Expect to sweat a bit so wear your workout clothes.

Classes from January 26 - May 10; no class on March 15 or 22.

Yoga - McGowan Wellness Space (MG215)

Join current student and Yoga Instructor Ali Seidel for a Hatha Flow class. 

Classes from January 27 - May 15; no class on March 16 or 20.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) - McGowan Wellness Space (MG215)

A fun, functional, high intensity interval training conditioning class designed to burn fat and build lean muscle.  The class will focus on developing great movement patterns with kettlebells, bands and body weight for developing great posture, core strength, and joint stability as well as improved balance and agility all while working up a great sweat and testing your endurance. Instructor Patrick Webb is a certified personal trainer.

Free 3-Class Pass Program - Local Area Studios

The Institute has partnered with CarmelBarre, Om Yoga Studios, Seaside Yoga Sanctuary and Monterey Bay Meditation Studio to offer a free 3-class pass (limit one per student, per semester). Please review the frequently asked questions below for details or come by the Office of Student Services with your Student ID card to pick up pass(es).

Frequently Asked Questions

Every student can pick up one three-class pass per semester from the Office of Student Services. This pass will enable students to take three free classes of their choosing at either CarmelBarre Carmel location (Monterey location closing January 31, 2020). The student picking up the card will have classes redeemed on their CarmelBarre account; i.e., classes may only be redeemed by the student who picks up the card. See details on account creation below.

After redeeming their three-class pass, drop-in classes are offered at a discounted student rate for MIIS students. Speak with CarmelBarre directly to learn more.

CarmelBarre Policies

  • Advanced sign-up is required. Reservations are on a first-come, first served basis.
  • You may cancel registration for a class up to two hours prior to the start time of the class. If you do not cancel within two hours and do not show up, your class will be deducted from any class credit you have on your CarmelBarre account.
  • Please bring a mat, grip socks, and water (towel optional). Students who do not have socks will not be allowed in class.
  • Please also keep strong scents to a minimum—no heavy perfumes or lotions.
  • You must sign a Liability Release at the studio before you can participate in the class. If you pick up a three-class card, you will sign this at Student Services; otherwise, please ask the CarmelBarre instructor for one on-site the first time you arrive at class.

Creating a CarmelBarre account:

You must sign up through CarmelBarre to redeem your three free classes. The instructions are listed below.

  1. Go to https://carmelbarre.com/registration/ and complete the registration form

Redeeming a three-class card:

  1. Complete the step above to create your CarmelBarre account.
  2. Bring your student ID to the Office of Student Services to pick up a three-class card.
  3. CarmelBarre will add three classes to your account. You must have already created your CarmelBarre account via the step above.
  4. You may sign up for any CarmelBarre class offered, up to three classes, to redeem your free classes. The cancellation policy listed above still applies; if you late-cancel (less than two hours prior to the start of class), one of your free classes will be redeemed.

CarmelBarre utilizes the MindBody app for signing up for classes. Sign up for classes online here, or download the MindBody app for mobile.

MIIS students with a valid student ID can pick up a card for three free classes from Student Services each semester. This pass can be used at Om Yoga Studios: 631 B Cass St, Monterey, CA. Students must present the 3-class card and their Student ID to the studio on the day of their first class. The card expires 30 days from the first class. Classes may only be redeemed by the student who picks up the card. 

Additionally, Om Yoga offers the discounted membership rates for MIIS students who present their student IDs - 3 months of unlimited yoga for $199 for students, faculty and staff.

Student Services has partnered with Seaside Yoga Sanctuary to offer three free yoga classes at their Carmel-by-the-Sea studio location for Institute students. You can pick up one pass per semester at Student Services like the passes listed above.

Seaside Yoga Sanctuary also has ongoing discounted passes and monthly memberships for students.

Student Services has partnered with the Monterey Bay Meditation Studio (MBMS) to offer three free meditation sessions at their Pacific Grove studio location for Institute students. You can pick up the pass at Student Services like the Barre and Yoga passes listed above.
