In addition to the general application requirements, applicants to the MA in Russian must submit the following:

Writing Sample

As part of the online application, please submit a writing sample of approximately two pages in Russian, preferably typed, reflecting as much as possible your current writing ability. The sample may be on any topic. Before starting the online application, save your file as a Word file or PDF, so that it will be easy to find and upload into the application.

Course History (Prior Instruction in Russian)

As part of the online application, please upload a document with the information below about the Russian courses that you will complete by the summer. We don’t need every detail, just a one-page summary of your formal course work in the language.

  • level of course(s)
  • institution, term, and year for each course
  • names of instructors
  • hours per week
  • textbooks used and (approximate) extent to which the content of the text was covered

OPI Score (optional)

If you have completed an official OPI in the past few months, you may submit a record of your score in support of your application. You may upload the score with the course history above.

Language Assessment

If, after reviewing your application materials, the Director of the Russian School decides to proceed with proficiency testing, you will receive instructions for completing an online grammar test via email. If your score indicates that you may be eligible for admission to the graduate session, you will be contacted to schedule an interview in Russian, which will be conducted by telephone or by Skype.

If the results of your grammar test or interview indicate that you are not yet ready for the graduate program, you will be given the option of switching your application to the 8-week session.
