The following message was sent by email to all students on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

Dear Students,

I am writing to invite nominations for the Marjorie Lamberti Faculty Appreciation Award. This award is given annually to a Middlebury College faculty member who, following the example set by Professor Lamberti, demonstrates excellence in and dedication to teaching. The Student Government Association initiated a faculty appreciation award as an opportunity “for the College community to reflect on what makes an inspiring teacher, to recall the many gratifications of being a teacher at Middlebury, and to say to the award recipient and other deserving faculty members ‘we value what you do.’”

Marjorie Lamberti taught in the History Department from 1964 to 2002. She was a legendary teacher, specializing in modern European History. She is the author of a number of influential books and articles, including Jewish Activism in Imperial Germany: The Struggle for Civil Equality (1978) and The Politics of Education: Teachers and School Reform in Weimar Germany (2002). As the Charles A. Dana Professor Emerita, she is still an active member of our community.

In Professor Lamberti’s words, “this award honors faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching (be it lecture course, seminar, or laboratory) and dedication by giving time, energy, and effective effort in encouraging and supporting students in their search for knowledge and in their intellectual development inside and outside the classroom.”

All Middlebury College faculty are eligible for nomination. Please submit nominations to the office of the Dean of the Faculty by e-mail (dfaculty@middlebury.edu, or you may simply reply to this message). The nomination should include the name of the nominating student, the name of the nominated faculty member, and a description of why the instructor is deserving of this honor.

Nominations are due no later than Friday, April 14, 2017. A selection committee of students will review the nominations and choose the recipient, who will be honored at an awards ceremony on a date to be announced shortly. Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge the important work of the faculty at Middlebury.

Best,

Andi Lloyd

Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty
