MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – On July 20, the town began a three-week phase to demolish the two existing railroad bridges on Merchant’s Row and Main Street in downtown Middlebury, and replace them with temporary spans. For the duration of the construction, which is expected to wrap up the weekend of August 12, parking and traffic in town will be restricted.

The town offers regular updates on the construction project, with detailed schedules of the work, information on traffic restrictions, and transportation alternatives such as the free Main Street Shuttle to transport people quickly in and out of downtown during the construction. The downtown construction is part of a multi-year effort to replace the two aging and deteriorating bridges over the rail lines and update the tunnel to meet current safety standards.
