During the 2020–21 academic year, Middlebury will provide the same kinds of academic support that students have come to expect, although a number of processes and formats have been modified because of the pandemic. As usual, this academic support includes writing consultations and support, subject tutoring, time management consultations and study strategies support, and consultations with research librarians. This fall, all Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research (CTLR) appointments and tutoring sessions will be offered virtually, as will library consultations and appointments.

Academic support available in 2020–21 also includes access to specialized facilities and materials, including use of the library’s collections and services. Remote access to facilities and materials will be provided whenever possible, but some services are only available to those students who are in person. Services that are offered in person only include maker space and use of specialized studios, performance spaces, and labs.

Advising

First-Year Seminar Advising

Incoming first-year students will receive academic advising from their first-year seminar (FYS) instructor. The first-year seminar booklet, distributed to students in mid-July, provides substantial guidance about choosing seminars and exploring broader course options.

FYS instructors/advisers will establish contact with all of their new advisees and provide essential advice once rosters have been finalized in early August. One-on-one email or Zoom communication with FYS instructors is possible for new students in August. More intensive academic advising will occur during orientation in late August and early September.

Advising for Returning Students

Academic advisors will be reaching out to their continuing students during the final week of July in order to assist with registration for fall courses in August.

Resources for Learning and Library Services

Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research

The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research (CTLR) offers a wide array of programs to support students in their academic endeavors.

Academic Support

CTLR offers professional and peer writing tutoring, professional and peer tutoring in the STEM fields, foreign language peer tutoring, and time management and study strategies support. This fall, all CTLR tutoring will be offered virtually.

Fellowship and Undergraduate Research Advising and Resources

Advising appointments and information sessions through the CTLR will be held remotely until further notice. Senior work and student academic conference participation continue to be supported, consistent with College policies. Visit the Undergraduate Research Office and Fellowships web page for more information.

Library Services and Resources

Middlebury College libraries will be open to faculty, students, and staff once the quarantine phase has passed. Once we have opened, in order to ensure the safety of our patrons and our staff, you will find that we have transformed the space by reducing the seating capacity, temporarily limiting access to the stacks, and providing curbside delivery for access to print materials. Our online services remain available throughout. Here are our most important links that you may find useful during the fall semester, regardless of whether or not you are on campus.
