Student organizations are an important part of campus life at Middlebury. The Student Activities Office (SAO) is committed to helping students connect with one another while following public health principles and campus policies. Student organizations are encouraged to find creative ways to operate and engage their members.

Students taking on new organization leadership roles in the spring semester will be required to complete mandatory student organization training. Only organizations completing this training will be considered in good standing with the SAO, allowing them to have limited programming consistent with gathering-size limits and physical distancing and face covering requirements. Student organizations should plan all recruitment efforts virtually. The SAO will offer a virtual Student Activities Fair and work with student organizations in assisting with opportunities to recruit new members.

Until in-person classes begin, meetings must be convened through virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams, Google Hangout, telephone, etc.). As campus health conditions allow, in-person activities may be possible using health and safety precautions, in compliance with current gathering-size limits. Physical distancing and face coverings will always be required. Attendance at all in-person meetings and events should be accurately taken and saved for contact tracing purposes. Outside guests are not allowed on campus to participate in student organization activities.

All events must be scheduled through Event Management and have proper health and safety measures in place. In-person events will be reviewed by the COVID-19 Event Review Team. This team meets twice a week to review events for the risk of COVID-19 transmission and to evaluate mitigation strategies. Events that are low risk are likely to be approved, where events that are moderate to high risk may not be approved.

Approval of any activity off campus in Addison County will be dependent on local health conditions, current travel restrictions, and the type of activity. Individual students and student groups should fill out the College-Sponsored Off-Campus Travel form on Presence when planning to use College funding or resources for travel, or if you are organizing an activity as part of a College entity.
