Middlebury, VT—In the tradition of Public Radio International’s “Selected Shorts,” Middlebury College student orators will read selections from the New England Review (NER) literary magazine in this second annual live performance of “NER Out Loud,” Friday, March 4 at the Mahaney Center for the Arts. The event will be followed by a “S’more Readings” reception with the readers and NER staff, along with representatives of several student literary magazines. Both events are free and open to the public.

This year’s readers and selections will include: Kathleen Gudas ’16.5 reading from “Forty-Two” by Lisa Taddeo; Mariah Levin ’16.5 reading “High School in Suzhou” by Cate Marvin; Alexander Burnett ’16* reading from “To Bundle or to Tarry” (1871) by Henry Reed Stiles; Melanie Rivera ‘19* reading “At the Tribunals” by Patrick Rosal; August Rosenthal ’17 reading from “Eleven Girls” by David Ebenbach; and Sally Seitz ’17 reading from “The Red Painter” by Penelope Cray. All of the selections were originally published by New England Review in 2015.

Editors and contributors to the student literary magazines Blackbird, Frame, MiddGeo, Sweatervest, and Translingual will also be on hand at the post-show reception to discuss their publications and give sample readings from their pages. Attendees will be invited to enjoy s’more-themed treats while listening to the readings in the lobby.

NER Out Loud is the result of a new partnership between the Mahaney Center for the Arts, the student oratory society “Oratory Now,” and the New England Review. Literary arts programs are a growing part of the overall offerings at the Mahaney Center for the Arts, and Middlebury College enjoys a rich tradition of literary prominence, thanks in part to the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English and Writers’ Conference and the New England Review. Vermont is home to more writers per capita than any other state in the country, and the Middlebury community boasts many prominent writers, both on- and off-campus.
