Women 2nd, Men 13th At NCAA Cross Country Championship

The Panther cross country teams took part in the 2011 NCAA Championship races hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Middlebury women earned their fourth runner-up finish in the 32-team race, while the men’s squad finished 13th. Washington University won the women’s race with 70 points, followed by Middlebury (111) and Williams (153). North Central captured the men’s title with 110 points, while the Panthers came in with 372 points. Chiara Del Piccolo won the women’s race in 20:52, while Ben Sathre of St. Thomas won the men’s event with a time of 23:44.
The six-time champion Middlebury women were led by senior Margo Cramer and junior Addie Tousley, who both earned top six finishes and All-American honors. Cramer finished the race in fifth with a time of 21:05, while Tousley was close behind in sixth with a time of 21:07. Senior Chelsea Ward-Waller was next in 47th place with a time of 21:53, followed closely by sophomore Emily Singer in 50th (21:55).
Senior Hannah Meier (21:56) was Middlebury’s fifth scorer on the day finishing in 55th place overall. Sophomore Emily Attwood (22:24-116th) and senior Claire McIlvennie (22:33-140th) rounded out Middlebury’s racers.
The Middlebury men were making their second straight appearance in the championship race. Senior Michael Schmidt paced the team with a 26th place overall finish in 24:38, earning All-American honors.
Junior Jack Davies finished the race in 56th place (24:58), followed by classmate Patrick Hebble in 131st (25:29). Sophomore Nate Sans was next for the Panthers in 138th (25:32), while rookie Kevin Wood was 148th in 25:35 to round out Middlebury’s scorers. Also competing at the event for the men were sophomore Greg Krathwohl in 162nd (25:39) and junior Taylor Sundali in 245th.
