Ski Team With Season-Best Finish At Dartmouth Carnival

The Middlebury College ski team earned its best finish of the season by placing third at the Dartmouth Carnival. UVM won the event with 1,002 points, followed by Dartmouth (904), Middlebury (722) and UNH (687). The Panthers return to action this weekend when they host their own carnival on Friday and Saturday.
The men's alpine team paced the team over the weekend, finishing in second place in both the giants slalom and the slalom. Leading the way was first-year racer Robert Cone (Killington, Vt.), who had a big weekend with a pair of third place finishes. Cone came in with a time of 1:55.14 in the GS, while coming in at 1:38.92 in the slalom. Sophomore Bryan Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) was next in the GS, placing sixth in 1:55.72, followed by senior Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) in 12th (1:56.26). Sophomore Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) was Middlebury’s second finisher in the slalom, placing sixth in 1:39.42, followed by rookie Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) in 11th (1:39.89).
Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) earned an impressive fourth place finish in the GS (1:58.17), while coming in 13th in the slalom (1:43.90). Senior Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) placed 12th in the GS (1:59.28), while earning a team-best ninth place finish in the slalom (1:42.84). Sophomore Bronwyn Oatley (Thornhill, Ont.) rounded out Middlebury scorers in both events, finishing 15th in the GS (1:59.23) and 14th in the slalom (1:43.95).
In the women’s 5K freestyle event, sophomore Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) led the pack with a 15th place finish in 14:49. Finishing the race in 25th place was first-year racer Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in 15:20, followed closely by sophomore Keely Levins (Rutland, Vt.) in 26th (15:20.6). Senior Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) led the squad in the 15K classic race, finishing in 18th place with a time of 54:47. Levins was next in 25th (55:29), followed by Attwood in 30th (55:49).
First-year racer Ben Lustgarten (Burlington, Vt.) was the men’s top finisher in the 10K freestyle race, coming in 15th with a time of 12:51. Just behind was junior Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) in 16th (12:51.1), followed by senior Jimmy Levins (Rutland, Vt.) in 21st place (13:00).
Middlebury earned a team-best third place finish in the men’s 20K classical race. Marston led the pack with an impressive sixth place finish with a time of 1:01.08. Junior Doug DeBold (Wayzata, Minn.) followed in 12th place (1:02.19), followed by Lustgarten in 14th (1:02.49).
