Skiers Headed To NCAA's

The University of Vermont will be the host school for the 58th Annual NCAA Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships from March 10-13, 2011. Alpine events will take place at Stowe Mountain Resort, while the nordic events will take place at the Trapp Family Lodge. First-year racers Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Robert Cone (Killington, Vt.) along with sophomore Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) will represent the men’s alpine squad, while seniors Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) will race on the women’s side. Representing the men’s nordic team will be junior Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) and first-year racer Ben Lustgarten (Burlington, Vt.), while sophomore Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) will race for the women.

The NCAA Skiing competition opens on Wednesday March 9th at Trapp, with the men’s 10K free at 10:00 a.m. and the women’s 5K free at noon. The alpine competition takes center stage on Thursday, March 10th at Stowe, with the women’s GS at 9:30 and the men’s race slated for 1:00. Action returns to Trapp on Friday, March 11th with the women’s 15K classic at 9:30 and the men’s 20K classic race at 11:30. Competition concludes on Saturday, March 12th at Stowe, with the slalom races at 9:30 (men), 10:30 (women), 12:15 (men) and 1:15 (women).

Middlebury finished fourth in five of six carnivals this season, earning a season-best third place finish at the Dartmouth Carnival.

Cone and Roberts both enjoyed great rookie seasons on the alpine slopes for the Panthers. Cone earned three podium finishes in the GS this season, placing third in both the GS and slalom at Dartmouth. He finished in the top seven eight times, including a fifth place finish in the slalom at the Middlebury Carnival.

Roberts finished in the top 10 seven times this year, including a season-best second place finish in the GS last week at the Eastern Championships. The rookie finished third in the GS at the Middlebury carnival, while earning a fifth place finish in the giant slalom event at Colby.

McNealus earned a podium finish in the GS at Colby this season, with four other top 10 finishes in ’11. The sophomore placed seventh in the slalom at St. Lawrence, with a sixth place finish at Dartmouth.

Dvorak has paced the Middlebury women all season long, earning five top-five finishes during the ’11 carnival circuit. The senior has earned a podium spot in the slalom during each of the last two carnivals (Middlebury/Bates), while placing in the top five in both events at the Vermont Carnival.

Woodworth had a very consistent season for the Panthers on the alpine hills. Through the first seven events of the season, she finished in the top 15 in every event. Her best finish of the season was a ninth place effort in the slalom at Dartmouth.

Prevot was the top performer on the women’s nordic team with three top-10 finishes this season. Her best result was a fourth place finish as part of the relay team at the Middlebury Carnival, placing ninth the previous day in the 10K free race.

Marston was a consistent performer for the men, placing in the top 15 in the first seven races of the year. His best effort of the season was a sixth place finish in the 20K classical race at Dartmouth, placing eighth the following week in the 10K free at Middlebury.

Lustgarten turned in his best finishes at the end of the season for the Panthers, including a fifth place effort in the 20K classical at the Eastern Championships. He also earned a top 10 finish the previous week by placing seventh in the 10K free at Middlebury.
