Ski Team Fourth After Day One At Colby

Middlebury sits in fourth place after one day of racing at the 2014 Colby College Carnival in Maine. Vermont leads the event with 473 points, followed by Dartmouth (444), Colby (361) and the Panthers (329). Action resumes on Saturday with the alpine slalom races as well as men’s and women’s nordic events.

Ben Lustgarten picked up where he left off last season, placing second for the men in the 10K classic with a time of 31:34, 34 seconds off the winning pace. Austin Cobb was next for the Panthers in 27th place (33:56), followed by Jack Steele in 36th (34:14).

The women placed two racers in the top 10 of the 5K classical race. Heather Mooney was tops on the list, coming in ninth overall with a time of 17:41, 1:03 off the winning pace. The top 10 finish was the third in her career at Middlebury. Not far behind was Stella Holt, finishing in 17:45 to earn her first top 10 finish in 10th place. Rounding out Middlebury scorers was Kaitlin Fink, who placed 24th in 18:28.

Yina-Moe Lange paced the women’s alpine team in the GS, earning her second-straight top 10 finish. On Friday, she completed the event in seventh place, earning a time of 2:20.80. Rookie Lisa Schroer finished 23rd overall in her first completed collegiate race, earning a time of 2:27.41. The team’s third scorer was Katelyn Barclay, who covered the course in 2:31.87, good for 26th place. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Kara Shaw and Elle Gilbert both did not finish their first runs.

Christopher McKenna repeated his finish of last week in the giant slalom, placing fifth overall with a time of 2:11.33. Nick Bailey was next at Sugarloaf, placing 13th in 2:13.13, followed by Colin Hayes, who earned a 29th place finish with a time of 2:17.31.
