Department of Education connects with Bread Loaf

Karen Cator, director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education, inaugurated Connected Educator Month (August) this summer at the Bread Loaf campus in Vermont. During an exciting day, Cator listened to leaders in the Bread Loaf Teacher Network, Brent Peters, David Wandera, Lorena German, Charlene Ortuno, and Jineyda Tapia, talk about collaborative, media-rich projects that they’ve pursued in their classrooms, allowing students to bring their own voices and cultures to bear on the learning process. In the evening, Cator gave a talk to the Bread Loaf community on “Connected Teaching and Learning.” As follow-up, the Bread Loaf Teacher Network has been listed on the Connected Educators website (connectededucators.org) as a resource for teachers across the country. We encourage all BLTN members to post comments on their projects on the site. In addition, Cator will be going to Lawrence, Mass., this fall to see our Bread Loaf/Andover teachers in action.

Bread Loaf and the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS)

Backed by a grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, Bread Loaf has joined with the Write to Change Foundation and the Santa Fe Indian School to support a yearlong initiative designed to enhance the reading and writing skills in all content areas of students at SFIS. In September, members of the Bread Loaf faculty and the Bread Loaf Teacher Network—Cheryl Glenn, Ceci Lewis, and Susan Miera—joined teachers and students from SFIS for an intensive three-day writing workshop. Bread Loaf and Santa Fe teachers will participate in follow-up sessions throughout the academic year, with the goal of creating a sustainable plan for the effective teaching of writing across the curriculum.

New Jersey Bread Loaf celebrates itself

Members and friends of the Bread Loaf community in the central New Jersey area got together in October, at the house of director Emily Bartels, to reconnect over memories, anticipations, and an abundance of food and drink.
