Director’s Corner

Emily%20BartelsWelcome to the first edition of the Bread Loaf School of English newsletter, which will be published electronically, spring and fall.

Perhaps the best way to announce its purpose is with Shakespeare’s one-size-fits-not-quite-all (remember the Ghost) first line of Hamlet: “Who’s there?” Bread Loaf is its people—its students, faculty, staff, and friends. This newsletter gives us a place to share the lives and afterlives of our Bread Loaf summers, to document who’s there and who’s inevitably changing some important piece of the world. We’ll keep you up to date on everything Bread Loaf: from the summer activities on each of our campuses to the groundbreaking work in our teachers’ classrooms to the initiatives and partnerships we continue to create as we build a remarkably diverse and talented learning community. Please send your stories to

Director, BLSE

Rex Lee Jim, MA English ’01, vice president of the Navajo Nation, relaxes in a lawn chair on the grounds of the Bread Loaf campus and recites a poem that he wrote several years ago. Like most of his poetry—he has published two volumes—it is written in Navajo and requires some explanation.

Bread Loaf’s director and associate director are happy to announce the creation of a new advisory board. Meet the members here.
