Bread Loaf Centennial

One hundred years ago, the college resolved “to conduct a School of English at the Inn next summer.” That next summer, fifty students embarked on a journey of discovery and metamorphosis at the newborn graduate school located in the mountains beyond Middlebury. Travel along ten miles of winding dirt stagecoach road would have given these students ample time to imagine the intellectual possibilities of a summer devoted to study within a remote and spectacular backdrop.

As Bread Loaf approaches its Centennial in 2020, we’ll be sharing related news and stories. We’ll be inviting you to join in a reunion extravaganza at the Vermont campus and offering other opportunities to celebrate one hundred years of revolutionary education with us. To commence our celebratory year, we ask you to contribute to the Bread Loaf Centennial Journal with your creative work and photos.

So begin to reminisce about your own initial journey up the mountain and to imagine what Bread Loaf can become in the next 100 years.

Bread Loaf Reunion

We invite Bread Loaf alumni, faculty, current students, staff, and friends to join in our Centennial reunion weekend, scheduled for June 19-21, 2020.

Registration is open now! Register online at go/middlebury.edu/blse100reg.

Find FAQs, schedule, and fees on our reunion site.

The Centennial Challenge

You can help shape Bread Loaf's second century. Make a gift for financial aid, and generous donors will match your gift 1:1 (up to a combined total of $1 million). The goal is to build support for student scholarships.

Every year, exceptional teachers who would contribute to classrooms and community—at Bread Loaf and beyond—do not enroll because they cannot afford the cost of a Bread Loaf summer. Additional funding for scholarships would enable more teachers to say yes to Bread Loaf and to take what they have learned back to their schools. Funds raised through the Centennial Challenge will make that dream a reality.

Stepping forward as Centennial challengers are Bread Loaf dean Emily Bartels, former director Jim Maddox, longtime faculty members Lucy Maddox and Andrea Lunsford, Middlebury trustee Roxanne McCormick Leighton ’67, trustee Ted Truscott ’83, and Kathy O'Connor Truscott ’83.

Centennial Birthday Parties

If you can’t make it to Bread Loaf’s Centennial reunion (June 19-21, 2020) in Vermont, or if you are looking for more ways to engage this year, join us for Bread Loaf birthday bashes. This October, we will celebrate in DC on Wednesday, October 16th with associate director and Lehigh University associate professor of English Lyndon Dominique and in NYC on October 23rd with dean Emily Bartels. Bread Loaf Inn managers Edward and Victoria Brown MAs ’89 will hold a gathering in Baltimore coinciding with the annual NCTE conference on November 22nd. Register for these events online. In 2020, we’ll be hosting parties in Boston and San Francisco – stay tuned for dates and invitations.

There will be cake.

Bread Loaf Centennial Journal

In celebration of the idea that sparked the Bread Loaf School of English one hundred years ago, the creativity that is ignited each summer at Bread Loaf's campuses, and the imagination that will fuel our next one hundred years, we're asking alumni, current students, and faculty to contribute their creative work to our online, multimedia Centennial journal.

We'll be accepting submissions of poetry, stories, essays, memoirs, creative nonfiction, flash fiction, one-act plays, lyrics, comics, photography, video, photo essays, documentaries, two-dimensional art, videos of performances and readings, or an as-yet unimagined genre of creative work.

Find details and submit your work at https://forms.middlebury.edu/blse/submit-to-the-centennial-journal.

Pop-Up Centennial Book Shop

One particularly special treat we have in store for Reunion Weekend is a pop-up book shop that will sell faculty and alumni publications. The shop will appear on the Bread Loaf campus in Ripton over Reunion Weekend, and it will persist online through the website of the locally-owned Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury.

If you are a published author, please take a moment to fill out our Google form so that we can fill our shelves with as many Bread Loafers’ books as possible! We plan to open the online shop in time for the December holidays, so please submit your titles and information by December 2nd in order to have your books available for purchase. As soon as the online shop is open for business, we will provide that link. (And don’t worry if you miss the opening; we will be adding titles until March 2nd.)

Centennial T-Shirt Design Contest

We’re seeking your original designs for the Bread Loaf Centennial t-shirt! Designs should:

  • reflect Bread Loaf’s distinctive qualities
  • incorporate language or art that expresses Bread Loaf’s centennial
  • include no more than two colors
  • entail a front- and/or back-of-shirt design element
  • be your original work

Submit your design by January 15, 2020 here.

The winning designer will receive two free t-shirts and Centennial Glory. Attendees at the Centennial Reunion will receive a complimentary shirt, and other members of the Bread Loaf community will be able to purchase them. We’ll post the winning design here in February 2020.

International Bread Loaf T-Shirt Day

Nearly one hundred years ago, Middlebury College’s board of trustees voted to open a school of English on the Bread Loaf campus. And we’re so glad they did. We’re commemorating that date, August 31, 1919, by instituting the first-ever International Bread Loaf T-Shirt Day.

We’re asking all Bread Loafers around the country and the world to celebrate the founding of Bread Loaf by joining us in wearing their favorite Bread Loaf t-shirts on August 31, 2019.

Get together with your Bread Loaf friends – or find new ones – and take a photo showcasing your Bread Loaf spirit. Tag your photos with #breadloafschoolofenglish on Instagram, or send your photos to us at blse100@middlebury.edu to include in a slideshow.
