Michael Armstrong, former Head Teacher at Harwell Primary School in England,
renowned for his popular course on Describing the Imagination at Bread Loaf/Vermont, has published a new book, What Children Know: Essays on Children's Literary and Visual Art (
In the book, Armstrong describes how children’s stories, poems, drawings and paintings might be taken seriously as works of art by measuring them against seven criteria.
In his close examination of children’s writing and drawing, he makes the case that such an understanding could transform “every aspect of schooling: the structure of the curriculum, the method of teaching, the form of assessment, the relationship of the teacher to pupil, and the cultural role of the school within society.”
