Michael Katz, C.V. Starr Professor Emeritus of Russian and East European Studies at Middlebury College, was named an Emeritus Fellow for 2011-2013 by the Mellon Foundation.
The Mellon fellowship, intended to support the scholarly activities of outstanding faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who remain active and productive in their fields after retirement, was awarded to twenty-eight distinguished scholars from colleges and universities across the country in that year.
Michael reports that he is currently working on a project tentatively called "The Tolstoy Family Story Contest," translating "counter-stories" by Sophia Andreevna Tolstaya and her son Lev Lvovich Tolstoy written in response to Leo Tolstoy's notorious study "The Kreutzer Sonata." Yale University Press will publish the work next year.
