Remembering Norton Girault

It is with deep sadness that we let the Bread Loaf Community know of the passing of longtime Bread Loafer and friend Norton Girault. Norton first learned about Bread Loaf in 1974 from his partner Wendy Miller, who attended the Middlebury Language Schools. Norton attended the conference that year and then returned over the next four decades to attend almost every summer for a total of 38 conferences. Norton participated in a fiction workshop each session, and in 2015, he was awarded the John Gardner Fellowship in Fiction for his book of short stories, Out Among the Rooster Men. In October 2018, Norton completed his novel titled Andre Boulanger.

Many remember Norton for his dedication to writing and improving his craft, and he was equally dedicated to helping other writers by giving experienced feedback in the workshops and offering encouragement both in and out of the workshops. A lover of dancing and especially to what might be thought of as his signature song, “I Got You” by James Brown, Norton was also known to enjoy both Barn Dances to the fullest at every session. Always showing kindness and interest for others during conversations, Norton also loved to share stories from his life and was a wonderful storyteller.  Now an indelible figure in Bread Loaf’s history, we miss him dearly.

Below we’ll share photos taken at Bread Loaf by Edward Brown and David Haward Bain. (We're also including a photo of the 1937 Louisiana State University cross country team. Norton was an award-winning athlete and shared that passion with Bread Loafers while helping with the Writer's Cramp Race each summer; see Norton in the bottom right of the team photo.)
