BL Environmental Writers’ Conference
and BL Translators’ Conference

On April 17 Middlebury College announced the cancellation of the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers’ Conference and the Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference, which were scheduled to take place simultaneously this June on the Bread Loaf campus in Ripton, Vermont

I received an acceptance letter for 2020 and have some questions:

Can I defer my acceptance?
All accepted participants for the 2020 conference have the opportunity to defer their acceptance to the 2021 conference. Faculty and dates for the 2021 conferences will be posted on the website on October 15, 2020. If deferring, please send an email to the Bread Loaf Office by November 1, 2020 to let staff know of your plans.

I was accepted and awarded financial aid for the 2020 conference. Will my financial aid award also be deferred?
All financial aid decisions including the amount awarded will carry over to the 2021 conference. Due to budget limitations it will not be possible to consider requests for an increase to an award.

What happens to the deposit and/or tuition payment I made for 2020?
All deposits (and payments) to reserve spots for 2020 will be refunded to participants.

Is it possible to have Bread Loaf keep the $300 deposit that I already paid to reserve my spot for the 2021 conference?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply the 2020 deposit to next year’s budget. Instead, staff will send a letter to 2021 participants with the link to a new form and information in November 2020.

Is it possible to donate the $300 deposit that I paid toward the 2020 session to the conference rather than receive it back?
It is possible to donate, if you wish to. Please send an email to Bread Loaf staff to let them know.

What happens to my application fee?
Applicants who have received an acceptance or rejection notification letter for the 2020 conference will not receive a refund of their application fee. Please note: this also applies to those who received a notification letter for 2020 and are choosing not to defer acceptance to 2021.

Can I defer to another year other than 2021?
Accepted participants for the 2020 conference may defer the acceptance to 2021 only.

What are the 2021 dates?
Though the 2021 dates have not yet been determined, we can note now that the conference will take place in early June, very likely at the start of June.

When will the 2021 information and applications be available online?
Applications and information (including faculty) for 2021 will be available via the website on October 15, 2020.

Will the same faculty return for 2021?
At this time, it is unknown which faculty might be able to return for 2021. The faculty for next year’s conference will be announced on October 15, 2020.

I received a wait list letter for 2020 and have some questions:

May I apply my 2020 wait list placement to a 2021 conference wait list?
The 2020 wait list placements are not being carried forward to the 2021 conference. We hope you will consider applying for the 2021 session when applications become available on October 15, 2020.

I did not receive a notification letter for 2020 and have some questions:

Why didn’t I receive a notification letter for 2020?
The June conferences offer rolling admissions, and with the interruption to the review process due to COVID-19, some applications had not yet been evaluated so it was not possible to send a notification letter.

What happens to my application fee?
Applicants who did not receive a notification letter for the 2020 conference will receive a refund of their application fee.

My application was not reviewed for 2020. May I use the 2020 application to pre-apply for next year rather than submit a new application for 2021?
Your 2020 application may not be used to pre-apply for 2021. It will be necessary to submit a new application when the 2021 applications become available on October 15, 2020.
