Middlebury delivers acceptance letters to largest ever applicant pool

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. ? A record 7,823 prospective students applied to Middlebury College for approximately 600 spots in the class of 2012. On March 28, the admissions office mailed letters to students regarding whether or not they have been accepted, and the information also became available online at 8 a.m. on March 29.

The acceptance rate for 2008 is 18 percent, which is a 5 percent decrease from last year's admittance rate of 23 percent.

The increase in applications represents a 49 percent jump since 2005, as well as a 91 percent rise in the number of applicants who identify themselves as students of color and a 78 percent increase in applications from international students during the same period.

"We're thrilled that so many diverse and highly qualified students continue to be interested in a Middlebury education," said Middlebury College President Ronald D. Liebowitz.

Commenting on what might have contributed to the overall increase in applications, Middlebury College Dean of Admissions Bob Clagett said, "Our commitment to programs such as environmental studies, the sciences, international studies and foreign languages continues to resonate deeply with students across the country and throughout the world at this time."

2008 Middlebury College Admissions Statistics:

. A record 7,823 students applied to Middlebury College for approximately 600 spots in the class of 2012.

. The number of applicants has jumped 49 percent since 2005, with a 9 percent increase over last year.

. The acceptance rate is 18 percent, a 5 percent decrease from 2007.

. The number of applicants who identify themselves as students of color has risen 91 percent since 2005; there was a 13 percent increase over last year.

. The number of international student applicants totaled 1,404, an increase of 21 percent over last year. 

. 91 percent of applicants used the electronic application.
