MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – With the election as a backdrop, we asked students if they thought America was working hard or hardly working. They offer a variety of responses in this short video, depending on what the word “work” means to them in this context. For some, it is measured in how late their fellow students study at the library or whether the American Dream is alive. Others refer to the gridlock in Congress or the large prison population in the U.S. as signs that our society is not functioning well. A few staff and faculty members add their perspectives, too. What comes through is that work, be it political or personal, is someting central to American identity. As one student says, in America, “the ideal is that you want to be working.”
