MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College’s 96th Winter Carnival celebration began on Thursday, February 14, with a bonfire and fireworks on the Ross Lawn and continued throughout the weekend with victory for the Middlebury ski teams, dancing, skating, and a variety of other activities.

In races on Friday and Saturday, the men’s and women’s alpine and Nordic ski teams won their own carnival with impressive performances at both the Middlebury Snow Bowl and Rikert Nordic Center. The carnival win is their first since 2008, when they captured the Vermont Carnival. Highlights include sophomore Erik Arvidsson’s win in the slalom and giant slalom, and senior Caroline Bartlett’s first place in the giant slalom. On Friday, senior Sam Wood won the 15K Classic.

With the theme “Middnight Moonlight,” this year’s carnival also featured the screening of historic films with cookies and hot cocoa at Crossroads Café, an improv comedy show in Wilson Hall, and a late-night block party at the Ridgeline Houses. Grammy-nominated DJ Audien provided entertainment at the Winter Carnival Ball on Saturday night, and children from the Middlebury community as well as students from the College performed in the annual Ice Show.

The nation’s oldest student-run winter carnival, the Middlebury Winter Carnival is organized by the Middlebury College Activities Board and the Winter Carnival Sports Board.
