MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury Board of Trustees has approved an increase of 3.25 percent, or $2,261, for annual undergraduate tuition and room and board charges for the 2019–2020 academic year. The increase will bring the cost for a year at Middlebury College to $71,830, including $55,790 for tuition and $16,040 for room and board. An additional mandatory student activity fee will increase by $8 to $426.

Middlebury’s financial aid program ensures that many students will pay far less. Middlebury is one of a relatively small number of colleges and universities that admits students without regard to their financial need or ability to pay, while also meeting the full demonstrated need of those admitted students. Middlebury’s budget forecast for the 2019–2020 academic year projects a 9 percent increase in financial aid for the undergraduate College over this year. Middlebury College provides need-based aid to more than 45 percent of its students, with an average grant this year of more than $49,000.

The average debt upon graduation for Middlebury College students who take Federal Need-Based loans as part of their financial aid is $14,874.

Middlebury President Laurie Patton noted that, like other colleges and universities, Middlebury faces increasing costs. She pointed to a low student-faculty ratio, vibrant campus culture, and financial aid as examples of areas that require funding and remain priorities.

“A Middlebury education is a major investment for many families, and we recognize and appreciate that,” said Patton. “It is critical that we maintain the quality of the student experience as well as our commitment to making Middlebury accessible to a diverse group of talented and bright students whom we want to continue to attract to our campus.”
