David Bain to Sign Copies of His New Book, “The
College on the Hill,” on Oct. 26 — New Illustrated
History of Middlebury College Offers a Rich Understanding of the
Individuals Who Shaped it Over 200 Years
David Bain will sign copies of his book, “The
College on the Hill,” a new illustrated history of Middlebury
College, on Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 12-1:30 p.m. in the Grille foyer
of Middlebury College’s McCullough Student Center, on Old Chapel
Road off Route 30. The book will be offered at a special, one-time,
pre-publication price of $25. The event is free and open to the
public. Free refreshments will also be available.
A fresh account of Middlebury College’s history,
“The College on the Hill” emphasizes the personal point
of view. The result is a rich
understanding of the story of the College and the individuals
who shaped it over 200 years. The oversized book is 464 pages
long with more than 600 photos. Middlebury College is publishing
“The College on the Hill” on the occasion of its Bicentennial.
David Bain is a writer, editor, reviewer, and member
of the Middlebury College English department. He is the author
of another new book, “Empire
Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad,” which
will be published in November by Viking and will be a main selection
of the Book-of-the-Month Club. His previous
books include “Whose Woods These Are: A History of the Bread
Loaf Writers’ Conference 1926-1992” (1993); Robert F. Kennedy
Memorial Book Award-winner, “Sitting in Darkness: Americans
in the Philippines” (1984); and “Aftershocks” (1980).
