Rebecca Mitchell Honored for Her Book

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.–Rebecca Mitchell, assistant professor of history, received an award for her book, Nietzsche’s Orphans: Music, Metaphysics, and the Twilight of the Russian Empire (Yale University Press), from the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) on November 19. ASEEES is the leading private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about Russia, Central Eurasia, and Eastern and Central Europe. The association announced the award, the W. Bruce Lincoln Book Prize, at its 48th annual convention held in Washington, D.C.

According to ASEEES, the W. Bruce Lincoln Book Prize is awarded for an author’s first published monograph or scholarly synthesis that is of exceptional merit and lasting significance for the understanding of Russia’s past. The work must have been published during the previous two years.

ASEEES honored a number of historians at its convention, presenting the award for distinguished contributions to area studies, nine book prizes, an outstanding doctoral dissertation prize, and a Graduate Student Essay Prize.
