Why should we work with the Communications Office?
Our office is responsible for telling Middlebury’s story to the world. And you are a part of that story! Perhaps most important, the experienced staff of the Communications Office—editors, writers, designers, Web producers, and videographers—are here to help other offices and departments develop compelling print, online, and interactive communications. We are great listeners, and we ensure that your project meets the College’s high standards. Plus we really like what we do! And we hope you will let us help you tell your story, too.
What services do you offer?
- Design (print and Web)
- Website development
- Communications audits/consults
- Communications strategy
How do I get started?
Contact our production manager, Kelly Rizzo, firstname.lastname@example.org, or ext. 5173, and she will walk you through the process. It will begin with a brief conversation and the completion of a project-planning sheet. We try to keep this initial step very simple, although the more we can establish your needs and goals in the beginning, the more successful we will be in the end.
What information do I need when I contact you?
Our project-planning sheet asks for the information we consider necessary, but you don’t need to know all of the answers before having an initial conversation with Kelly Rizzo, our production manager. We encourage you to come to us with what you hope to achieve (e.g., “increase annual giving by 5 percent”) rather than, “We would like to produce a brochure.” Let us talk this through with you to make sure you are taking the absolute best approach to meet your goals.
Do you charge for your services?
No, we do not charge for any of our services (design, writing, photography, website development, video production etc.). Although there are times when we need to contract with an outside vendor, for example for printing or mailing, and you will be charged for those services. But we always do our best to provide you with top-quality, in-house services free of charge.
How long will it take for you to produce our project?
This is a great question, and it varies depending on the complexity of the work. Often we are able to turn around a simple postcard within a few weeks (printing time included), but the redesign of a website can take many months of brainstorming and implementing. Our production manager, Kelly Rizzo, will work with you to map out a schedule to meet your needs.
Do you fill out the forms for mailing services or do we?
Although we will be in touch with mailing services to let them know a job is coming, we ask that you fill out the necessary forms and collect your own mailing data.
How much notice do you need?
Ideally, as much as possible! But we understand that some projects arise at the last minute, and we do our best to accommodate these requests. While mapping out your annual goals, it is always helpful for you to be in touch with Kelly Rizzo, our production manager, if you anticipate a communications need. Even if you contact us a year in advance—we’ll take it! We are also available to brainstorm an idea you may have at any time—just give us a call.
Can you help us send out our HTML e-mail or e-newsletter?
We do offer training on setting up and sending out e-communications.
