Budget Update – 4/17/25
Dear Faculty and Staff,
We’re writing with updates and reminders about opportunities to connect as we move forward with plans to achieve a balanced budget at Middlebury College.
We appreciate your participation in this process and want to be sure all are aware of the available resources.
Voluntary Staff Retirement Program
We held information sessions for staff who are eligible for the early retirement incentive program and their supervisors in recent days and heard from a number of individuals who are interested. As a reminder, the deadline to apply and express interest in the program is Wednesday, April 23, by 5 p.m. Those who express interest will receive individualized agreements by early May, and signed agreements need to be returned within 45 days. Submitting an application does not obligate you to participate in the program; it simply allows you to receive personalized information and consider your options.
We will continue to be in touch with those who have applied to provide resources and information to support their decision-making process. Also, in mid May, we will share information with supervisors about how we will review any vacancies created by voluntary retirements. Final information about departures and retirement dates will be shared with supervisors in June.
Sharing Ideas
Thank you to all who have submitted a Budget or Structural Change Idea. We received many creative suggestions and will be reviewing all submissions with the appropriate departments. The form remains open, and we welcome additional ideas.
Upcoming Information Sessions
We received many thoughtful questions and comments about the budget process at our recent information sessions for faculty and staff. Following are additional planned sessions:
- Thursday, April 17: Town Hall Meeting for MIIS Faculty and Staff, 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. PDT, McGown 100 or on Zoom. David Provost, executive vice president of Finance and Administration, will share an overview of the Middlebury budget situation and MIIS’s ongoing steps toward financial sustainability.
- Monday, April 28, Vermont Meeting for Staff and Faculty, 9 a.m., EDT, Wilson Hall. This will be an opportunity to follow up after several weeks of continued discussion, provide updates, and answer questions.
- Monday, April 28, Virtual Meeting for all Staff and Faculty, 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT, Zoom. This will be a similar session to the above 9 a.m. in-person meeting in Vermont, but held on Zoom. Please sign up here to receive the Zoom link.
