About Us

Earn an MA in English at Bread Loaf, one of the best English master’s programs in the country.

The Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English is a summer master’s program for teachers and other professionals. Each summer, a community of learners gathers for an intensive six-week course of study at our three campuses: St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Lincoln College, University of Oxford, in England; and the Bread Loaf mountain campus in Vermont.

Bread Loaf aims to produce innovative teachers and thinkers. Through the interpretation of literary and critical texts, Bread Loaf students engage in complex thought, write persuasive and original essays, and use new technologies, as relevant, to develop effective teaching and learning practices.

Bread Loaf students may earn a Master of Arts or Master of Letters degree in English over four to five summers, or pursue continuing graduate education over one or more summers.
