Charles Rosen to Play at the Concert Hall

Renaissance man Charles Rosen will play a recital
of music from the last century at Middlebury College’s Concert
Hall in the Center for the Arts on Saturday, January 25, at 8
p.m.

Connoisseurs of the piano admire Charles Rosen’s
spirited excursions into an enormously varied repertoire. This
eminent musician, who has appeared with virtually every major
orchestra and conductor in the world, has collaborated with some
of the century’s greatest musical luminaries, including Pierre
Boulez, Elliott Carter, Gregor Piatigorsky, Isaac Stern, and Igor
Stravinsky.

Charles Rosen’s recordings of Beethoven’s last six
sonatas and the “Diabelli” Variations both received
Grammy Award nominations. Stereo Review called his Schumann:
The Revolutionary Masterpieces “electrifying,” while
The Washington Post praised the “renowned clarity,
rhythmic strength, and inexorable sense of design” for his
album Beethoven: The Great Middle Period Sonatas. The pianist’s
vast recording anthology also features his distinctive interpretations
of works by Bach, Brahms, Boulez, Chopin, Debussy, Haydn, Liszt,
Ravel, Scarlatti, Stravinsky, and Webern. Mr. Rosen’s book, The
Classical Style: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, won the 1972 National
Book Award.
