Middlebury College’s 75th Annual
Winter Carnival Offers Caribbean Theme

Public Invited to Attend Fireworks, Cultural Gala,
Ice Show and Ski Events

A Caribbean theme will give spice to the 75th
annual Middlebury College Winter Carnival, the oldest and largest
student-run winter carnival in the country, on Feb. 26-28. The
public is welcome to attend fireworks, a cultural gala, an ice
show and ski competitions.

Following a candlelight procession with the College
Pep Club, a fireworks display will burst into the skies over the
College’s Center for the Arts (CFA) at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday,
Feb. 26. Observers may view the fireworks from the CFA’s parking
lot or terrace, which is accessible via Porter Field Road, off
Route 30.

Immediately after the fireworks, from 7:30-10 p.m.,
a cultural gala with the theme “Escape to the Islands,”
will take place in the Center for the Arts. Just inside the CFA’s
main entrance, in Room 232, children can create their own masks
with feathers, glitter, beads and ribbon under the direction of
student volunteers and Community Friends, a program run by the
Counseling Service of Addison County that links local children
with College students and others who serve as “Big Brothers”
and “Big Sisters.” In the CFA’s lower lobby, Lambsbread,
a reggae band, will be playing throughout the gala. In the dance
theatre, students will perform native dances, and the International
Student Organization will present a talent show in the CFA Concert
Hall. Light, exotic hors d’oeuvres also will be available.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 and at 1 p.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 28, skaters who have been rehearsing for months will take
to the rink in an ice show with the theme “Paradise on Ice”
in the College’s Nelson Arena on Route 30. The show will present
a blend of over 75 new and experienced skaters, both from the
student body and the Middlebury College Figure Skating Club, whose
members include faculty, staff and their children. The show will
include skating performances by two student acappella singing
groups, the D-8 and the Bobolinks.

Ski races will take place Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday,
Feb. 28. Cross country events, including classic and freestyle
races, will be held at the Rikert Ski Touring Center in Ripton.
Alpine events at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Hancock will
feature slalom and giant slalom races.

Tickets for the ice show are $5 for adults, $3 for
students, and $1 for children under age five. Tickets are available
at the Center for the Arts box office at 443-6433, at the door,
or at the student activities office.

Admission to the fireworks, cultural gala and ski
events are free.
