Bebe Miller Company to Perform at Middlebury College
Center for the Arts

“Bebe Miller is a cartographer of human emotions,
mapping the landscape of the passions in her dance…Miller
surveyed the terrain of the human heart and revealed its secrets
with luminous intelligence.” —The Washington Post

The Bebe Miller Company, whose dancing has been called
“complex and completely intriguing” by Dance Magazine,
will perform two works, “Going to the Wall” and “Blessed”
at 8 p.m. on Sept. 28 and 29 in the dance theatre at the Middlebury
College Center for the Arts on South Main Street (Route 30). Both
works are choreographed by Bebe Miller.

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Miller also will offer a beginner-intermediate
level master class from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and a lecture accompanied
by a demonstration titled “Constructing ‘Going to the Wall’ ”
from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Both the class and the lecture-demonstration
are free and open to the public, and will take place in the Center
for the Arts.

Bebe Miller, a native New Yorker, has been creating
dances for almost 20 years and formed the Bebe Miller Company
in 1985.

“Going to the Wall,” which also features
text by Bebe Miller, is a dialogue about identity. As an African-American
artist, Miller explores issues of identity, aesthetics, politics
and vision in the context of the current ongoing discussion on
race and culture.

Referring to a working draft performance of “Going
to the Wall,” The Village Voice said, “Seeing Bebe Miller’s
company on a hot night seems a good idea. The dancers shine; sweat
flies and drips off them. The dancing-already malleable, sensuous,
charged-seems to flame up before our eyes; in repose the bodies
soften and melt, and we melt with them.”

The Bebe Miller Company, which has toured extensively
throughout the United States and in eight countries, will also
perform “Blessed.” Describing the choreography in “Blessed,”
The Village Voice said, the “crisp, precise steps erupt out
of more languorous ones; phrases take off in all directions-so
do limbs; diversity slides into unison…”
