“International Affairs in the

21st Century: Integration or Disintegration?”

to be Topic of Symposium at Middlebury

College on Nov. 11-13 — Talks by Bicentennial

Fellow-in-Residence Madeleine Kunin and Others

“International

Affairs in the 21st Century: Integration

and Disintegration” will be the topic of a symposium at Middlebury

College on Nov. 11-13. All events—lectures, panel discussions,

a lunch, and a concert by a Chinese musical group—are open to

the public.

“International

Affairs in the 21st Century: Integration

and Disintegration?” is one in a series of academic symposia

that are a central part of Middlebury College’s Bicentennial celebration.

At each event, experts from government, business, academia, and

other fields join Middlebury faculty in addressing current and

future issues related to education, international affairs, and

other topics.

Bringing together a number of experts from different

regions of the world, the symposium will focus on the changes

that are affecting the nation-state, the dominant form of government

in Western politics. This political structure is increasingly

subject to the opposing pressures of growing commonality through

globalization, and ethnic and cultural differences that remain

strong.

On Thursday, Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m. in Twilight Hall

on College Street (Route 125,

near the Municipal Building), a pre-symposium

lecture and panel titled “Globalization and the University”

will take place. Olin C. Robison, president of the Salzburg Seminar

and president emeritus of Middlebury College, will speak on the

internationalization of higher education. His talk will be followed

by a panel discussion on the same topic. Middlebury College students

who

have recently studied abroad in a variety of locations

will serve as panelists.

On Friday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m.

in the Sunderland Language Center’s Dana Auditorium on College

Street (Route 125), there will be a lecture, titled “Preparing

for Globalization: A Critique,” by Ezra F. Vogel, director

of the Asia Center at Harvard University.
At 8:15 p.m. at the same location, “Standing

Alone: Switzerland in the Holocaust” will be the topic of

a talk by Middlebury College Bicentennial Fellow-in-Residence

Madeleine M. Kunin, former ambassador to Switzerland and governor

of Vermont.

Olin Robison will moderate a panel discussion titled

“What Lies Ahead, Integration or Disintegration?” on

Saturday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. in Dana Auditorium. Middlebury alumni

will serve as panelists: Lisa Giuffra de Diaz, vice

president for Latin American Equity Sales at Goldman Sachs; James

S.Gibney, managing editor of

Foreign Policy magazine; Charles A. James,

former ambassador to the Republic of Niger; Jeffrey

W. Legro, associate professor

of government and foreign affairs at the University

of Virginia; and Karen A. Stolley, director

of graduate studies in the department of Spanish at Emory University.

Following the panel discussion will be a luncheon

at 12 p.m. in the Redfield Proctor Room of Proctor Hall on Hepburn

Road, off College Street (Route

125).

At 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, the group Music
