“Celebration of the Century” to be Theme of the 77th Annual Middlebury College Winter Carnival on Feb. 24-26 — Something for Everyone at Winter Carnival 2000, from Fireworks to the Ice Show “Ice Ages”
With the “Celebration of the Century” as its theme, the 77th annual Middlebury College Winter Carnival, the oldest and largest student-run carnival in the country, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 24-Saturday, Feb. 26. The public is invited to attend fireworks, a cultural gala, an ice show, and ski competitions.
At 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, a fireworks display will burst into the skies over the College’s Center for the Arts (CFA). Observers may view the fireworks from the CFA’s parking lot or terrace, both accessible via Porter Field Road, off Route 30.
Just after the fireworks on Thursday, a cultural gala with the theme “Blast from the Past” will take place in the CFA from 7:30-10 p.m. Dancers can move to the beat of Inca Son, performing music and dance of the Andes. Other entertainment throughout the evening will include local town and College performers, and a 1950s dance party for children of all ages that will offer young carnival goers the opportunity to “twist and shout.” Cotton candy, ice cream floats, and other refreshments will be provided. The fireworks and cultural gala events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, Feb. 25 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m., an event called “Commons Afternoon: Time Out” will take place outdoors behind Middlebury College’s Battell Dormitory on College Street (Route 125). For the second year, “Commons Afternoon” will offer such activities as sculpting, Velcro wall-climbing, relay races, and refreshments—hot cider, hot chocolate, and chocolate marshmallow confections famiarly called “s’mores.” Free and open to the public.
Later on Friday, at 7 p.m.—and again on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m.—the Middlebury College Winter Carnival Ice Show will be performed in the Chip Kenyon ‘85 Arena at Middlebury College on Route 30. This year’s show is titled “Ice Ages,” and will feature special guest skaters, the Middlebury Figure Skating Club, and Middlebury College’s talented student, staff, and faculty skaters as they perform to the most popular music of the last century. Tickets for both shows can be obtained by calling the Middlebury College Center for the Arts at 802-443-6433 starting Feb. 15. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Admission for both performances will be $5 for adults, $3 for students and children. The doors will open one hour before each show.
Some of the finest collegiate skiers will compete during Winter Carnival on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26. Alpine races will take place at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Hancock, Vt., Route 125. Nordic events will take place at the Rikert Touring Center in Ripton, Vt., on Route 125. Teams from Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Dartmouth, Harvard, Johnson State, St. Lawrence, St. Michael’s, University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, and Williams will compete in various racing events. There will also be an all-you-can-eat barbecue at the Snow Bowl on Saturday at 12 p.m. Tickets for the barbecue will be $5.50 per person, and sold “at the door.”
