Steve Reich and Musicians to Perform at Middlebury College Center for the Arts on April 5

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Steve Reich and Musicians will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 in the Concert Hall of the Middlebury College Center for the Arts on Route 30. The New York Times has described Reich as a “composer of dense, lush orchestral tapestries.”

In 1966, after studying at the Juilliard School of Music, Reich founded his own ensemble of three musicians, which rapidly grew to 18 members or more. Since 1971, Steve Reich and Musicians have toured the world and performed to sold-out houses at venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall and the Bottom Line Cabaret-both in New York City.

Born in New York and raised there and in California, Reich has produced a body of work ranging from musical composition to music theatre combined with video imagery.

In 1990, Reich received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition for his piece “Different Trains,” which The New York Times hailed as “a work of such astonishing originality that breakthrough seems the only possible description.”

His music has been performed by major orchestras around the world including the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the BBC Symphony. In addition, several choreographers have created dances to Reich’s music, including Jerome Robbins’ “Eight Lines” for the New York City Ballet.
