Campus Discovery Day Offers the Community
a Chance for Exploration at Middlebury College on Sept. 17
MIDDLEBURY, VT-Do we share our universe with other creatures? Have
Vermont baseball players ever made it to the majors? Does it really make a difference
what Hamlet wears on stage?
These topics will be addressed during Middlebury College Campus Discovery Day on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1-4 p.m. In honor of its Bicentennial, the College is inviting the surrounding community to its campus to discover some of the resources it has to offer. Activities will include music, lectures, games, a sing-along, a treasure hunt, ice carving and other demonstrations, face painting, camping tips, and free snacks and beverages. Events will take place at three locationsùBicentennial Hall, the Center for the Arts, and the quad in front of McCullough Student Center in the middle of campus.
“Our hope is that there is something for everyone to enjoy-whether it’s hearing our faculty speak on interesting and diverse topics, playing children’s games with College students who are members of the Mountain Club, or watching our students rehearse a play. This is a chance for the College and the community to celebrate the Bicentennial together on Middlebury’s campus,” said Mona Wheatley, director of Bicentennial planning.
In the classrooms and labs of Bicentennial Hall, the new science facility that opened in 1999, faculty will offer discussions about a range of topics, from Vermont baseball players in the major leagues and the latest news in astronomy to the college application process. Several hands-on workshops will provide visitors with the opportunity to use one of the College’s computer labs or its Geographic Information System (GIS) lab. All talks and workshops will take place twice, once between 1-2:30 p.m. and again between 2:30-4 p.m.
In Bicentennial Hall’s Great Hall, a demonstration on how to make ice cream
with liquid nitrogen, complete with edible samples of the results, will take
place along with performances by student a cappella groups. Just outside Bicentennial
Hall on Discovery Court, Middlebury College dining services will offer two food
demonstrations-one with Vermont apples and another on Japanese cooking.
At the Center for the Arts, events will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process. Ongoing activities will include a musical treasure hunt, a sing-along, play and dance rehearsals, face painting, a creative food project, an ice carving demonstration, and a live remote broadcast by WFAD Radio. The theatre costume shop will be open to visitors as well, where period and newly designed pieces will be on display. Popcorn, cotton candy, and lemonade will contribute to the carnival atmosphere.
On the quad in the center of campus, student coffeehouse singers and musicians and the Doughboys, a faculty band that has appeared locally, will perform from an outdoor stage. The Doughboys offer an eclectic mix of folk, rock, and Latin originals. Children can also participate in games led by the Mountain Club.
Admission is free of charge. Light snacks and beverages will be available free of charge
at each of the three activity sites, where two shuttle buses will make continuous
stops throughout the event. Middlebury College Campus Discovery Day will take
place rain or shine. The activity sites are Bicentennial
Hall, located on Bicentennial Way off College Street (Route 125); the Center
for the Arts on South Main Street (Route 30); and the quad in front of McCullough
Student Center in the middle of campus off Old Chapel Road. For more
