MIDDLEBURY, Vt.-Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, with special guest the Jazz Mandolin Project, will appear in concert at Kenyon Arena on the Middlebury College campus on Saturday, April 24.

Béla Fleck is considered one of the premiere banjo players in the world. A five-time Grammy Award winner, Fleck has the distinction of being the only musician to be nominated for Grammys in pop, jazz, country, classical, bluegrass, world music, spoken word, inspirational and composition.

In 1989 he formed the Flecktones. The band made its self-titled debut recording in 1990 by playing a “blu-bop” mix of jazz and bluegrass, quickly becoming a commercially successful, critically acclaimed and award-winning band. Commenting on the Flecktones’ “Left of Cool” 1998 album, a critic for Entertainment Weekly observed, “Heavyweight players who make an endearing fusion, the Flecktones have a fine time roaming all over the musical map . it’s hard to resist a band that draws on bluegrass, funk, world music, pop and jazz with such glee and blissful lack of pretension.”

Along with Fleck, the band, which performs more than 200 shows annually, includes bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist RoyEl who is also known as Future Man, and saxophonist Jeff Coffin.

Opening for the Flecktones will be mandolinist Jamie Masefield and the Jazz Mandolin Project. The Burlington-based group, which also includes Danton Boller on upright bass, Greg Gonzales on drums, and Mike “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou on trumpet and keys, has performed in venues across the country and around the world. The group is known for a unique sound which brings the mandolin into modern jazz and bridges the audience gap between jazz lovers and jam-rock fans.

The Middlebury College Activities Board is the sponsor of the event.
