Concert of traditional folk and religious music of Russia: Russian music traditions spanning more than two millennia and countless ethnic regions were in danger of extinction until Dmitri Pokrovsky (1944-1996) set about preserving them in 1973. Dressed in colorful costumes and playing ancient instruments, this fascinating ensemble draws from agricultural, spiritual and social roots, playing such folk music as exuberant wedding tunes, doleful funeral tributes and buoyant planting songs. Introduced in the United States during a 1988 Paul Winter tour, the Dmitri Pokrovsky “living library” offers a window into the Russian soul.

Free

Concert Hall, Middlebury College Center for the Arts, South Main Street (Route 30)
