“A Glimpse into Teenage Motherhood and Medical Culture in the Dominican Republic”

Dena Simmons ‘05 is a recent graduate of Middlebury College where she majored in Spanish and minored in Teacher Education. She has worked as an education policy intern in the Mayor’s Office in New York City for two summers doing projects on student health in schools, juvenile justice, and teenage pregnancy. This summer she worked on a special project for the Senior Corps of the Corporation for National and Community Service in Washington, D.C., researching ways to sustain and support the Senior Corps’ mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents. She is currently in the Dominican Republic as a Fulbright scholar, investigating the public health and education systems to learn effective methods of preventing teenage pregnancy in the Dominican Republic as well as among Latin Americans in New York City.
