Middlebury hosted the Stone Soup Summit on March 27 at McCardell Bicentennial Hall. The event, described as the southern Champlain Valley’s annual farm-to-school gathering, drew together educators, growers, producers, food service providers, and students from throughout the region to look at improving child nutrition and wellness through the context of local foods.
Emily Hoyler, a visiting lecturer in education studies at Middlebury, helped organize the event and says it relates well to the course she’s teaching this spring titled Foundations of Education for Sustainability. “The summit is a wonderful opportunity to bring students out of the classroom and into the community to learn,” Hoyler said.
One of Hoyler’s students, Chelsea Colby ‘17.5, helped out with the event at Bicentennial Hall and was impressed with what she saw among presenters and participants. “It’s a topic that needs to be explored, and what we’re doing here today gives people the opportunity to explore different avenues of sustainability and to discuss it with community members,” she said.
