MIDDLEBURY, Vt.– It was a raw, wintry day when we tagged along with students in the winter-term course “Landscape: Photography and Geography.” The students had ridden by van to photograph a nearby quarry, a striking landscape feature within minutes of Middlebury that very few people ever see. The quarry is owned by Ohio-based Omya, a mineral processing company.

Taught by visiting winter term instructor Timothy Case, the course examines concepts closely associated with geography—place, space, time, and the human landscape. Students think about how these ideas transformed landscape photography into a powerful mechanism for understanding and conveying critical changes in the environment and climate. The course culminates in a public exhibition of student work.

“It’s wonderful to bring students to different kinds of environments right here in Middlebury,” says Case. “It lets them experience their place and where they live totally differently.”
