Moving the Historic Hubbard Cabin

Every visitor to the Snowbowl has driven past the historic Hubbard Cabin, and generations of alumni have enjoyed it as a cozy respite from the cold during a day on the slopes. Over the years, it served many purposes—from ski lodge and office space to storage to housing for Rikert managers—before falling into disrepair and no longer being used after 2003.

Now, after a short journey across the Snowbowl grounds, the log structure has a new home between Starr Lodge and the snowmaking pond. After some restoration work and a new addition, this humble structure built in 1938 with local spruce by members of the Middlebury Winter Sports Club, will return to service as the headquarters for the Middlebury ski teams.

Aptly named for Richard Hubbard ’36, who later became Middlebury College’s first full-time coach for both men’s and women’s alpine ski teams, the cost of the move and renovation of one of the nation’s oldest ski lodges by New England Building Movers with support from M. Gale Buildings, is entirely gift funded by alumni and other donors.
