Middlebury Center for Nonproliferation Studies Opens Vermont Office
The Middlebury Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) officially opened its newest location on the campus of Middlebury College with an open house reception on October 1. The gathering drew students, faculty, and staff from across campus and featured remarks by the CNS leadership team and undergraduate students who had undertaken work with the center.
CNS is the largest U.S.-based nongovernmental organization dedicated to research, teaching, and training on threats from weapons of mass destruction. For more than 35 years, the center has worked to educate the next generation of nonproliferation experts. The new Middlebury office will be led by Stephen Herzog, professor of the practice in the International and Global Studies Program.
The new center, located at 46 South Street, represents an expansion of opportunities for students to engage with nonproliferation issues. “We are essentially setting up shop to work with the undergraduates directly in Middlebury, which is a new chapter for us,” said Herzog. “This continues our longstanding programs of having Middlebury students as summer fellows and winter interns in Monterey, and occasionally in Washington, D.C.”
In addition to summer and winter internships, undergraduate students have the opportunity to study special topics in nonproliferation. Herzog, for example, is currently teaching an undergraduate nonproliferation policy lab in which students study policy-relevant skills for analyzing weapons of mass destruction. Experts from the center also teach courses during winter term in Middlebury.
