In connection with the Theatre Department’s upcoming production of his play Almost, Maine, the College hosted Tony-nominated actor and playwright John Cariani for a series of workshops and engagements with students and community members.

In addition to working with the Almost, Maine cast and sitting in on Professor Callie Kimball’s advanced playwriting class, Cariani led acting and playwriting workshops that were open to Middlebury students and community members. Both workshops were packed, drawing participants from all over Vermont.

Cariani’s visit, organized by the Theatre Department, with support from the Mahaney Arts Center, created a perfect opportunity for students and the broader community to celebrate their shared love of a modern classic. The play comprises a series of vignettes, each a self-contained romantic comedy, that take place in the remote town of Almost, Maine, on a cold winter night as the northern lights start to appear. In unexpected and hilarious ways, each scene explores themes of love, loss, and human connection.

Almost, Maine opens at the Seeler Studio Theatre Thursday, October 29, and runs through Saturday, October 31, with two performances on Saturday. Tickets are available online at the Middlebury College Box Office.
