MIDDLEBURY, Vt.-The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and Houghton Mifflin Company announce a partnership to publish future winners of the Bakeless Nason Literary Publication Prize, sponsored by the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference of Middlebury College. Established in 1996, the Bakeless Prize is awarded annually in the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction to emerging writers whose work has not previously been published in book form. Houghton Mifflin will publish the work of the Bakeless winners in the Mariner Original paperback line, beginning with the prizewinners of 2001.

Houghton Mifflin replaces Middlebury College/University Press of New England as the publisher of the winning work.

Winners of the Bakeless Prize are selected by eminent authors in each category from nationwide submissions. Previous judges have included Andrea Barrett (fiction), Carol Frost (poetry), and Scott Russell Sanders (creative nonfiction). Prizewinners will also be awarded fellowships to attend the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference.

The Mariner imprint of Houghton Mifflin has published such esteemed writers as Penelope Fitzgerald, Anita Desai, and Michelle Cliff in its Mariner Original line. It has also launched the careers of young writers, including Michael Byers, Porter Shreve, and Jhumpa Lahiri, winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Judges for the 2001 Bakeless Prize are Howard Norman (fiction), William Finnegan (creative nonfiction), and Carol Muske (poetry).

The dates for submission for the 2001 Bakeless Prize are Oct. 1 to Nov. 15, 2000. Winners will be announced in April 2001. Books will be published by Mariner in the spring of 2002.
