Krista Miranda, Dance Program, will give a lecture as part of the Carol Rifelj Faculty Lecture Series titled, “’I wasn’t made to click. But with you I Click”: Constructing the Prosthetic Body in Claire Cunningham’s Dance Theater”.

In this lecture, performance studies scholar Krista Miranda, PhD, will present from her manuscript chapter, “‘I Wasn’t Made to Click. But with you I Click. We. Click.’: Constructing the Prosthetic Body through Claire Cunningham’s Dance Theater,” which considers the practical, political, discursive, and theoretical implications of the “prosthetic” body through the analysis of works by the Scottish dance-theater artist Claire Cunningham. With the use of her crutches, Cunningham’s work explores bodily boundaries via the relationship between the organic and inorganic and depicts the relational project of subjectivity and embodiment with explorations into how bodies not only connect, but also effectively create each other by virtue of their connection. From a crip theory perspective, this chapter explores how the body is a malleable assemblage of both self and other shaped discursively through sex, love, history, and one’s variable capacities over time.
