Film screening of TOXIC TEARS: the darker side of the Green Revolution
The Green Revolution of the mid 20th Century was aimed at reducing starvation in the developing world. Toxic Tears looks at the negative impacts of this transformation of agriculture.
The high-yield seeds and mono-crops used required heavy use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and water, at a higher cost than the traditional, more natural farming methods of the past. While the Green Revolution did increase crop production, it came at a high cost in India, leading to heavy personal debt, disharmony, environmental degradation, and thousands of suicides among farmers. This is a short but powerful film that includes farmers’ stories, background and commentary.
