Professor of History of Art and Architecture and Director of the Arts, Pieter Broucke will give this lecture.

“Two Temples and a Portico: the Ptolemaic structures on Yeronisos, Cyprus”

For the last three years, Pieter Broucke has been working with a team of international archaeologists directed by Dr. Joan Connelly (New York University) at the Late-Hellenistic island site of Yeronisos, of the southwest coast of Cyprus. While the evidence is scant, careful study reveals the presence of three monumental buildings, a first temple of unknown Hellenistic date succeeded by a temple and a stoa (a colonnaded portico), possibly commissioned by Cleopatra, the last Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt, and built by her army. In this talk, Pieter will discuss his findings as well as the work Middlebury students have been doing.
