You are invited to “Cake, Champagne, and Community” to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of MIIS (June 1955 - June 2015). Tuesday, June 16, 3pm at the Samson Student Center.
The month of June marks the Middlebury Institute’s birthday: the articles of incorporation of the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies are dated 9 June 1955, and were filed with the Monterey County Clerk on 17 of June. That means this month, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Institute. Since then, the Institute has changed its name several times and expanded its footprint in Monterey (and beyond). June nevertheless marks a fitting time to reflect on what has not changed, to the common threads that connect our current work of teaching and learning to the principles upon which the institution was founded. The Institute was founded by Gaspard Weiss, a language instructor, and like-minded colleagues. These were people who wanted to bring about positive international outcomes, through professionals educated in languages and cultures, working to break down barriers to peace and progress. Our aims today, and the means we deploy to achieve those aims are at the roots, very similar to the objectives sought by the Institute’s founders in June 1955.
In that spirit, please join us for an anniversary celebration, as we raise our glasses and renew our commitment and enthusiasm for the principles of this remarkable institution.
