The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs Program on Global Economics presents a talk with Claudia Sahm, founder of Stay-at-Home Macro (SAHM) Consulting and a Senior Fellow at
the Jain Family Institute.

The lives and economic livelihoods of Americans crumbled in the spring of 2020 as the pandemic began. The unemployment rate rose within a few months to nearly 20%. A vigorous response from Congress with the $2 trillion Coronavirus Relief and Recovery Act (CARES) and numerous efforts by the Federal Reserve to stabilize financial markets and lower interest rates aided the early recovery. A year later, the pandemic continued, and we had 10 million jobs less than pre-Covid, which is a larger shortfall than any time in the Great Recession. Moreover, some people, including those from minoritized groups, low-wage service workers, young adults, and parents, were hit harder than others. At the end of 2020 and in the spring of 2021, Congress passed two additional relief packages. At the same time, the Fed has committed to support the economy until people are back to work. This talk will assess the policy response so far and what is still needed to ensure an equitable and robust recovery for all people.
