Dancing with Robots: Responsive systems, feedback loops and choreographic experimentation in the digital age

In this lecture demonstration, dance and digital media artist Scotty Hardwig will share the theory and methods behind his work with digital dance-making practices. This lecture will be centered around three of the fundamental processes he works with artistically: screendance (dance-for-camera), motion capture for live performance, and responsive performance systems (robotics).

This large-scale, site-specific installation celebrates the passage of knowledge, experience, and hope from one generation to another. By slowly crisscrossing colorful, oversized ribbons within an expansive environment, the performers alter the color, density, and time signature of space, creating a world in which each movement and architectural detail is illuminated. Developed by Tzveta Kassabova with the Dance Company of Middlebury and guest performers. Location: Outside Mead Memorial Chapel on Oct. 8th. Rain date is Oct.

Gaga class with MIC Maree ReMalia

Take a break from studying/working and come enjoy end of semester stress relief with movement for well-being. As part of the Movement Matters Residency, Maree ReMalia will facilitate two Gaga/people classes that are open to the public. It will be a wonderful warm up for the day and great cool down for the evening. No previous experience necessary, all ages 16+ welcome. Dancing in Wild Places: Seaweed and Ocean Health

A dance in seven sections with text and movement by Andrea Olsen, introduced by John Elder. This 40-minute performance project is based on travels and dancing at seven seaweed sites internationally, including Monterey, California; Brittany, France; Connemara, Ireland; Skagastrond, Iceland; Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; Briny Breezes, Florida; and the Florida Keys. A brief discussion about the relationship between artmaking and environmental projects will follow the presentation.
