Monterey Museum of Art Lecture: Artist Pedro de Lemos

Pedro de Lemos was a life-long artist and designer who organized all his activities around the practice and promotion of hand-made objects and environments. He was a prominent artist with a rare talent for leadership, expressed in multiple ways from the domestic to the national and international arenas. This talk will focus on how Pedro’s beliefs and principles shaped his family life as well as professional positions and accomplishments. A book signing of Burton-Carvajal’s new publication, Artists’ Honeymoon, will follow the lecture. Free, thanks to generous support from the Marcia F.

Civilians in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan are facing the disastrous consequences of the ongoing war between the Sudanese government and rebel forces. The Sudanese government’s daily indiscriminate bombing raids have killed scores of civilians and have targeted civilian infrastructure. The government is purposely blocking necessary humanitarian assistance and preventing international peacekeepers from protecting civilians.

Lyceum of Monterey Model UN

The Lyceum Model United Nations, open to students of Monterey County, is an 8–10 week program that culminates in a one-day conference at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The Lyceum Model UN is a simulation of the “real-life” United Nations. Students will take part in some of the same activities that the real UN ambassadors participate in.

“Dancing the National Idea: The Reception and Appropriation of the Lezginka in Russia” For nearly two centuries, the Lezginka, a folk dance from the Caucasus region, has played a unique role in the performative representation of political, cultural and ethnic relations between the Russian Empire and its Caucasian colonies. The conflicting attitude towards the dance today illuminates the peculiar process of nation-building in contemporary Russia.
